Arriving in India as an infant in 1803, I entered the Army before I was fourteen years of age, and Your Excellency will be informed by the Enclosures that I was in active Service from 1815 to 1826, having the good fortune to be continually noticed on various occasions in the Nipal War, the War of the Deccan, and at the Siege of Bhurtpore, where I was Major of Brigade to Brigadier General McCombe. Most of those upon whose Staff I served are no more, but I have much pride and pleasure in referring Your Excellency to the enclosed Copies of letters regarding me, and to the following distinguished officers under whom I had the honor to serve :-
Major-General Sir Hardyman (Equerry to H.R.H. The late Duke of Kent) when in Command of the 17th Regiment in the Nipal War 1814 and 1815, as also when that officer was Brigadier General Commanding British Force at Shubbulpoor in the Deccan War in 1817 and 1818.
Brigadier General Edwards when Commanding the 17th Foot. Brigadier General McCante, both as Commanding Officer of the 14th Foot and Brigadier General at Bhurtpore in 1825 and 1826.
